What's involved in putting a screen room on a Riverside patio?

Screen room installation in Riverside adds screened walls under a roof over your patio or deck, so you keep the breeze and the shade and leave the gnats and mosquitoes outside.

Most people who call us already have a slab or a deck out back, often with a roof over it, and they've quit using it once the sun goes down. The price mostly moves with the size of the space, whether there's a sound roof to build under or one has to go up first through our patio cover installation work, how many doors you want and which mesh goes on which wall. The schedule turns on whether the job needs a permit and how long the city takes with it, and on any roof work. Once I've seen it, you get a written estimate with your own number on it.

How do you know it's time to screen in your patio?

Gnats at the patio table

If you've stopped eating outside because gnats and mosquitoes show up the minute the sun drops, the patio is only doing half its job. Screens fix that without closing off the breeze, and every summer you wait is one more spent indoors.

Mesh going brittle or torn

On an older screen room, mesh that's faded, sagging or splitting on one side usually means the sun has worn out that wall first. Small tears tend to grow, and once bugs find the gap the room stops doing what you built it for.

The dog keeps pushing through

A dog that leans on the screen or paws at it will stretch and tear standard mesh, usually low on the wall near the door. Patching the same spot every few months gets old, and the fix is usually a heavier mesh on the walls the dog can reach.

How we handle screen room installation

I start by asking what bothers you most out there, tiny bugs, the dog or hard sun on one wall, because that decides the mesh, and since each choice gives up a little airflow, view or upfront cost, I explain the tradeoff before you pick. Then I look at the parts you won't see once the room is done, what the walls will sit on and how water gets kept out where the room meets the floor and the house. A screen room that looks good the day we leave and lets water run under the bottom of the wall a year later isn't one I want to build. After that our crew builds the walls, sets the screens and doors, and cleans up before we hand it back to you.

Some homeowners want screens now and glass later, and others want a real room from the start. If you'd rather close in the slab you already have with windows and a finished floor, that's a patio-to-sunroom conversion, and if your outdoor space is a raised deck, we do deck-to-sunroom conversion too.

  • Tight-weave mesh for tiny bugs

This suits you if no-see-ums and small gnats are the real problem, because a denser weave stops what slips through standard mesh. You give up a bit of breeze and a bit of view for it, so we often use it only where the bugs are worst.

  • Pet mesh for dogs and cats

This suits a house where a pet leans on, paws at or runs into the screen, because the heavier coated strands stand up to claws and stretching. It costs more than standard mesh, so we usually put it on the lower walls and the door the pet can reach.

  • Tougher mesh for the sunny wall

This suits a room with one wall that takes the full afternoon sun, because a better-grade mesh or aluminum holds up longer there. You pay more upfront, and aluminum dents if it gets bumped, so it fits people who care more about long life than a perfect look.

Screen room installation in Riverside: permits, plans and termites

Riverside's Building & Safety Division keeps standard plans that help permits get issued faster, but its list names patio covers and block walls, not screen rooms, so it doesn't settle whether your screen room needs a permit. That's the city's call, and it's the office to ask, which I do for your address before we plan anything. When a job here does use one of the city's standard plans, the build has to follow that plan exactly, and any change means a design drawn for your site by a design professional, so we settle the room's size and layout before choosing which way to go. When your job needs a permit, we prepare and file the paperwork and meet the inspector on site. The city also rates its termite hazard as Very Heavy, which is one more reason I look hard at what the room sits on and keep wood up off the ground where we can.

We're based in Riverside and work in many of the cities around it in Riverside County and San Bernardino County. The calls look a lot alike, a slab out back with a cover already up and one wall that bakes all afternoon, and we see the same setup on jobs in Jurupa Valley and Moreno Valley. If your city isn't on our list, ask us.

What happens after you call about a screen room in Riverside?

  1. Call or send a request

Call (951) 394-2905 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set up a time for me to come out. Tell us a little about the patio so I know what I'm walking into.

  2. I measure and talk it through

I measure, look over the slab or deck and any roof that's already up, and talk through how you'll use the room and which bugs, pets or sun you're dealing with. Then I send you a written estimate, so you have the number in hand before you decide anything.

  3. We permit, build and walk through

Once you're ready, we take care of the permit paperwork if the job needs it, and our installers and I build the room. At the end we walk through it with you, open the doors and look over the screens together.

Frequently asked questions

How long does screen mesh last in strong sun?

One screen maker says screens in intense sun show deterioration in 10 to 12 years, while screens protected from it last 15 years or more. On a Riverside patio, that means planning to replace the mesh on the sunniest wall before the others. The same maker says mesh with good UV inhibitors resists sun damage better than budget mesh.

What is the best screen mesh to keep out no-see-ums?

A tighter, denser mesh is what keeps out no-see-ums and the smallest gnats. One screen maker says those bugs can occasionally get through standard mesh, and that the denser weave cuts airflow and slightly reduces your view. We can put it only on the walls where the bugs are worst so you keep more breeze elsewhere.

Is aluminum screen mesh worth the extra cost?

It's worth it if you care more about long life than a flawless look. One screen maker says aluminum mesh can last 20 to 25 years or more where the air isn't corrosive, but a bump leaves a dent or crease that stays, and it costs more upfront.

How much does a screen room cost in Riverside, CA?

Across the US, a 200 sq ft screened porch usually costs about $8,000 to $15,000 per job, and that's a national market figure, not our price. What yours costs depends on the size, whether a roof is already up and which mesh goes on which wall. The written estimate from my visit gives you your own number.

Can I add a screen room under the patio cover I already have?

Yes, but it usually means some work on the roof, not just new walls. One enclosure maker's instructions say that when the roof is already up, its front has to be raised several inches above the planned wall height and braced. I look at your roof during the estimate so that work is in the plan from the start.

Does an awning license cover a patio enclosure in California?

No. California's Contractors State License Board says its awning classification covers awnings and patio covers, and patio enclosures aren't included. If someone quotes you a screen room, ask which license they hold for the enclosure work.
